In the enigmatic film by French director Chris Marker, La Jetée (1962), nostalgia and the power of human memory enable a journey through time toward intense moments, filled with emotion and beauty, inviting the viewer to experience the present instance in its entirety. From a ruined world, the time traveller returns again and again to trivial points in his past, lingering on them. The continuation (durée) born from watching Marker's still images invites wonder at small, ordinary events: a walk, a glance, a passing conversation. The dwelling paintings of artist Gali Lutski, presented in this exhibition, recall such moments: points in time that invite viewers into an experience of joy and contentment long since lost. Contemplating Lutski's inner world stirs nostalgia for those events within the viewers' own lives. The memory of beauty toward which the artist reaches moves between the realism of capturing the magical moments that surround her and the fantasy that lends them an imaginary dimension.
The exhibition Under the Bridge, comprising works from 2017 to 2021, invites the viewer to experience a sense of security born of the imagination. The exhibition addresses the condition in which people continue their daily routines under existential threat, while attempting to shelter from it. Pulling a car under a bridge during an air raid siren evokes the memory of a child hiding beneath a blanket from fear. Yet when external protective mechanisms fail, the sense of security narrows to what lies within us, and the imagination becomes a space of refuge. The work Under the Bridge (2020), which lends the exhibition its name, offers a return to that point of shelter, where the bridge now leads toward a brighter possible future. The deer standing fearlessly before the viewer signals that the danger has passed, while the scrawls on the bridge walls present the memory of others who once sought shelter here from their own dangers.
A recurring motif in Lutski's work is the white raven, depicted at times as an observer, at others as a companion, and sometimes as a guiding figure. The white raven is a rare creature in nature, symbolizing deviation from the norm. In contrast to the black raven, regarded in folklore as an omen of ill and associated with death, the white raven symbolizes hidden knowledge and prophetic ability. Its fate is to stand out among the crowd, an exception to the rule. As a recurring motif, it casts its shadow across Lutski's body of work as a whole: work that challenges rational thinking as the sole truth, and turns the gaze toward the magic found in everyday spaces: a backyard, the road to work, under a bridge. The vivid colours, which might otherwise have seemed unsettling, instead invite the viewer, much like a spring blossom awakening the expectation of a sweet scent, toward something beautiful that defies rational explanation.
